- The operator holds the Pena slot and the Regaleira ticket. The morning slot at Pena is the most booked one, and the tour has it.
- No bus 434 queue, no shuttle line, no clock between the two estates: the van does the joins.

On your own: the clock that works
It can be done without a tour, and this is the day we would book: €58.60 per adult before lunch and the shuttle, April to September timetable, both tickets bought online before you go. The day stands or falls on the Pena slot.

What to change if
- The hill is in fog at 09:00
- Swap the order: Regaleira first on the 10:00 slot, Pena after lunch. Afternoon slots at Pena are the ones still on sale, and the cloud usually lifts by early afternoon.
- You only have four hours
- One palace, not two. Pena if it is your first time in Sintra; Regaleira if queues and shuttles are not your idea of a day. The half-day tours page has the shared vans that do one of them from Lisbon.
- It rains
- Both are mostly outdoors. Pena’s rooms are the dry hour; Regaleira’s tunnels are dry and its stone steps are slippery. Keep the order and bring a jacket: the hill is colder than Lisbon.
- You want the Moorish Castle too
- It fits: the castle gate is a ten-minute walk below Pena’s, there is no timed slot, and the walls take an hour to ninety minutes. Give Regaleira the 16:00 slot instead of 15:00 and make lunch a sandwich.
- Kids, or a bad knee
- Take the shuttle at Pena both ways and skip the park walk; at Regaleira do the well and the tunnels only. That saves an hour and most of the climbing.
Questions
Pena first or Regaleira first?
Pena first, unless the hill is in fog. Its morning slots are the most booked, so take the one you can get and fit Regaleira around it: Regaleira runs slots every 30 minutes until 16:30 in summer and gives an hour of grace.
Do I need to book both?
Pena yes, in season: timed entry and no grace. Regaleira sells at the gate too, but the slot you want may be gone by the time you arrive. €20 each for an adult, on the two official ticket offices, not on the sites that resell with a fee.
Is it doable without a car?
Yes, and easier: private cars are not allowed up to Pena, so a driver parks at Lourel and takes the same bus 434. Everything in the plan above is train, bus and feet.
