Pena Palace tickets

The short answer

Buy the essential visit at €20, take a slot at 09:30 or 10:00, and book it a few days ahead. That covers what almost everyone wants: the palace rooms, the terraces and the park.

The rest of this page is about the other tickets, the times that actually sell out, and how to avoid paying a reseller for something you can buy from the palace itself.

The tickets

Five products are on sale for Pena, and the differences are not obvious from the names.

Children under 6 are free on all of them, and residents of Portugal get in free on Sundays and public holidays with proof at the ticket office?. The shuttle bus between the gate and the palace door costs €4.50 return and is not in the Essential or park ticket.

The park-only ticket is the one people overlook. At €12 it gets you into the 85 hectares of garden and onto the terraces around the palace, which is where the famous photographs are taken. What it does not include is the rooms.

I buy the park ticket myself when I’m taking someone up for the view rather than the history, and nobody has ever complained about missing the interior. The Total, Guided and Staged visits are a different proposition: at €45, €75 and €95 they are for people who already know they want the private apartments, a guide or an actor in period costume, and none of them are the ticket a first visit needs.

One practical note on the family ticket. It covers two adults and two young people, and at €65 it saves €11 against buying the four separately. Nobody at the gate points this out.

What sells out, and when

This is the part no official page tells you, so we read the availability ourselves.

On 29 August 2026 we opened the official ticket office and checked every one of the next ten dates for the essential visit. Each day has 17 slots, every 30 minutes from 09:30 to 17:30. Here is what was already gone:

Every single date had at least one morning slot sold out. Only two dates had anything sold out after midday. The busiest was the Monday, with six slots gone, which fits what happens on the ground: Lisbon’s museums close on Mondays and the coaches come here instead.

That sample is one afternoon in late August, ten dates ahead. It is not a seasonal average, and I’d expect the pattern to soften in November and get worse in the first week of August. The shape of it, mornings gone and afternoons open, matches what I see on the hill all year.

Why the mornings go first is no mystery. Every guide, including this one, tells people to arrive early, and the tour operators book their slots weeks ahead for exactly that window. By the time an individual visitor is choosing a date, the 09:30 is often gone.

What this means for your day

If you want the palace before the crowds, you need the 09:30 or the 10:00, and those are exactly the slots that disappear first. Book them as soon as your date is fixed: in our late-August check the 09:30 was already gone on nine of the next ten dates, including the date ten days out. Winter is easier, but the morning slots still go first. If your slot has gone, read what to do instead.

If you’re deciding on the morning of, look at the afternoon. A 16:00 slot in July is a genuinely better visit than an 11:00 one: the day-trip groups are heading back to Lisbon, the light is on the yellow walls, and you can stand on the Queen’s Terrace without queueing for the corner.

A 09:30 slot from Lisbon by train and bus 434 is tight. The first direct trains from Rossio reach Sintra around 08:40, the 434 takes about 20 minutes to the park gate, and Parques de Sintra asks you to allow 30 minutes from the gate to the palace door, on foot or with the shuttle, with no tolerance for lateness?. Book 10:30 for that plan, or take a taxi or a tour that puts you at the park gate by 09:00.

Where to buy, and what to avoid

Buy from bilheteira.parquesdesintra.pt, which is the ticket office of Parques de Sintra, the public company that runs the monument. That is the only channel selling at the gate price.

Search for Pena tickets and you’ll also find sites with “official tickets” in the title that are not the palace. They resell the same entry with a fee on top. The one exception is Parques de Sintra’s own fast-track ticket, with priority entry and 25 places per slot, which is sold only through four partners: Blueticket, Headout, Tiqets and GetYourGuide?. For the standard Essential ticket, €20 for an adult, the palace’s own ticket office is the place.

One more thing about buying online. The ticket carries a date and a time. An online ticket can be moved to another date or time on the Parques de Sintra site until 18:00 on the day before the visit, within a year of the original date; a ticket bought at the gate cannot be changed, and a missed slot is not refunded?. Strong wind can close the terraces or the whole park and palace, and then the refund is on request, so check the Parques de Sintra notices before a windy Tuesday.

Combined tickets

Parques de Sintra sells combined entry for two or more of its monuments at a discount, 5% for two sites in the same purchase and 6% for three?, and the pairing that makes sense is Pena with the Moorish Castle, because the castle gate is a ten minute walk downhill from Pena’s. The castle has no timed slots, so the combination costs you nothing in flexibility.

In my own planning I treat the castle as the flexible half of the day: I book Pena for a fixed time and fit the castle around it, before or after, depending on how the queue for the shuttle looks.

Pena with Monserrate tickets works too if you have a full day and a car. Pena with Regaleira does not, because Regaleira is in the town and belongs to a different foundation, so it’s a separate ticket with its own slots.

Discounts that exist, and the codes that don’t

There are no promo codes for Pena, whatever the coupon sites say. The discounts Parques de Sintra publishes? that most visitors can use are these. The multi-site reduction above. Free entry on Sundays and public holidays for everyone resident in Portugal. Half price for visitors with a disability, with a companion admitted free. And the family ticket, €65 for two adults and two children aged 6 to 17, against €76 for the same four tickets bought one by one.
