Before choosing a tour from Sintra
Sintra or Portela de Sintra station?
Both are on the Rossio line, 40 minutes from Lisbon. Portela de Sintra is one stop before the terminus; EasyEscape and the jeeps leave from the café there. The tuk-tuks, Sintra Lovers and Grand Ventours meet at the Sintra terminus, a 4-minute walk from the old town.
Do I still need bus 434?
Not for these tours: they collect you at the station. On your own the 434 links the station, the old town, the Moorish Castle and Pena; the 434/435 pass is €13.50 for 24 hours.
Which train for an 08:30 start?
The 07:31 from Rossio arrives at 08:11 direct, 08:25 on a stopping service; the 08:01 arrives too late. Trains run every 30 minutes from 06:01.
Are the tuk-tuks worth it?
For an hour or two with no tickets and no climbing, yes: the loop past the palaces gives the views you would otherwise walk an hour for. They do not go inside; Outlanders sells a guided visit inside one monument as an option.
Going independently
From the station on your own: bus 434.
An adult Essential ticket and the 434 loop cost €33.50 from the station: the bus climbs to the Moorish Castle and Pena and comes back through the old town. Book the palace slot online and take the train that arrives an hour before it.
The 434/435 pass covers 24 hours; the Pena gate is 20 minutes uphill from the bus stop, or €4.50 by shuttle.
