Before choosing a half day
What can I see in Sintra in four hours?
One palace, done properly, and the old town: Pena with its park takes two and a half hours, Regaleira ninety minutes, and the bus or the walk between the station and either gate eats the rest. The half-day tours here do exactly that from Lisbon or from the station; two of them squeeze Pena’s terraces and Regaleira into five and a half hours. Two palaces in four hours means seeing both from outside.
Is half a day enough for Sintra?
For one palace, yes. Every half day here fits one of Pena’s park, terraces or rooms, and two of them add Regaleira. A full day adds the coast, or a second palace at a slower pace. The hours quoted include the drive from Lisbon, so a 5-hour trip is about 3 hours in Sintra.
Morning or afternoon?
Morning for Pena: the first slots sell out first, and the terraces are quieter before 11:00. Afternoon departures at 13:30 or 14:00 suit a late flight or a morning in Lisbon, and Regaleira stays open until 18:30 or 19:30.
Which half day gets you inside Pena’s rooms?
Ó turista’s shared trip, with the rooms ticket in the price, and the two private trips with the ticket included, SWINGO and Delighted Tours. Tripnova and EasyEscape stop at the park and the terraces; Stas Tours visits the terraces with the ticket paid back in cash.
Can I start in Sintra instead of Lisbon?
Yes. EasyEscape and Mr. Local Tours meet at Portela de Sintra station, 40 minutes by train from Rossio. That saves the road transfer and lets you leave Lisbon early or stay in Sintra after the tour.
Going independently
Only the ticket? Half a day by train.
The return train from Rossio and an adult Essential ticket come to €25.10. Pena sells timed slots every 30 minutes from 09:30 to 17:30; book the slot and take the train that arrives an hour before it.
The direct train takes 40 minutes. Bus 434 links the station with the palace gate; the 434/435 pass costs €13.50 for 24 hours.
