Before choosing a coast tour
How long do you need at Cabo da Roca?
Thirty minutes covers the lighthouse, the cliff path and the monument; an hour lets you walk to the second viewpoint. Many listings give it 15 minutes, which is a photo from the car park; the eight here give 30 to 60.
Cascais: a stop or a drive-through?
Several tours list Cascais as a pass-by on the way back to Lisbon. The eight here stop for 30 to 90 minutes: enough for the marina and the old streets, or lunch by the sea on the longer ones.
Pena first or the coast first?
Pena first on every tour here, while the palace slot is early and the light at the cape is better in the afternoon. Lisbon Native runs the coast first for a 14:30 Pena slot; it is on the hotel-pickup page.
Can I reach the cape without a tour?
Yes. Bus 1253 runs from Sintra station to Cabo da Roca and on to Cascais, and the train returns from Cascais to Lisbon. It takes most of a day and the buses are infrequent; a tour does it in three hours after the palace.
Going independently
Only the coast? Bus 1253 from Sintra station.
Train from Rossio to Sintra, bus 1253 to Cabo da Roca and on to Cascais, train back to Lisbon from Cascais. Add the Pena ticket only if you also climb the hill.
The Sintra train takes 40 minutes. Check the 1253 timetable before you go: departures are hourly or less.
