For the palaces, no. Private cars are not allowed up to Pena or the Moorish Castle, the historic centre is closed to non-resident traffic, and Regaleira has no visitor parking. You leave the car at Lourel, the free car park on the edge of town, and go up on the 434 like everyone else: buses 434 and 435 run from Lourel into the town and up the hill. A tour from Lisbon does the driving and holds the ticket, from €79 per adult.
A car earns its keep on the coast side: Cabo da Roca, Azenhas do Mar, Monserrate and the Capuchos have parking at the gate or nearby, and the Capuchos has no bus at all. Where the car helps and where it doesn’t is below the tours.

- No car can reach the two gates you came for; the van drops you at the Pena gate and waits.
- Two of the three hold the Pena ticket and its slot. A hire car does not get you in.
- The hill road is narrow and closed to private cars at the top. The van goes where a hire car cannot, and skips the 434 queue.

The same hill by train from Rossio is €38.60: the car saves the fare and buys you the same bus queue. Hire, fuel and tolls are not counted, and the Pena shuttle, €4.50 return, is extra either way.

What to change if
- You already have the car from Lisbon
- Leave it at Lourel and do the hill by bus, then drive the coast in the afternoon: Monserrate, Cabo da Roca and Azenhas do Mar are twenty minutes apart and all have somewhere to park.
- You are staying in Sintra with a car
- Same rule: the car sleeps at the hotel while you do the hill. It comes into its own for Cabo da Roca at five in the afternoon and for the Capuchos, which no bus reaches.
- You are thinking of renting a car just for Sintra
- Skip the hire car if Pena and the old town are the point of the trip: the train from Rossio is €2.55 and 40 minutes, and a small-group tour does the coast with the Pena ticket from €79 per adult. A car earns its keep only for a day on the coast.
- You want the coast, not the palaces
- Then the car is right: Cabo da Roca, Azenhas do Mar and the Capuchos in an afternoon, with parking at each and Colares on the way. The jeep tours do the same day off-road if you would rather not drive the EN247 yourself.

Is there parking at Pena Palace?
No. Private vehicles are not allowed up to the palace or the castle. Parques de Sintra sends drivers to the car parks in the historic centre and on the edge of town, above all the free one at Lourel, and bus 434 climbs to both gates.
Can I drive into Sintra’s old town?
Not unless you live there. The centre is restricted to resident traffic; the nearest parking is at the station or on the edge of town, and you walk the same ten minutes either way.
Where does a car actually help?
On the coast and in the serra: Cabo da Roca, Azenhas do Mar, Monserrate and the Capuchos have parking at the gate or nearby, and the Capuchos has no bus at all. All within about 25 minutes’ drive of Sintra town.
Should I rent a car in Lisbon for Sintra?
No. From Lisbon the train is €2.55 and 40 minutes, and from the station the 434 does the hill. A tour handles the coast and the ticket for €79 to €100 per adult. Rent a car for the coast beyond Sintra or for the Alentejo; for the palaces it is a car park and a bus.
