“Sintra Jeep Safari” is the tour that leaves the tarmac: after Regaleira, 90 minutes inside, half with the guide and half on your own, the restored UMM takes the forest tracks of the serra to Praia da Adraga for 20 minutes on the sand, then Cabo da Roca 20, past Guincho and down to Cascais station. Before booking a jeep
Do the jeeps go inside the palaces?
Only where the option says so. Wonder Van includes the Pena park ticket and walks Regaleira with the guide; Flamingo goes inside Regaleira with the ticket paid at the gate. Mr. Local Tours and Cintra Local show the palaces from the viewpoints and leave entry optional, tickets extra. None of the four includes Pena’s rooms.
How much off-road is it?
Flamingo says off-road outright: forest tracks to the beach, roof off in summer. Cintra Local has a short off-road stretch to Praia da Adraga for the adventurous. Mr. Local Tours drives the forest roads of the serra to hidden viewpoints. Wonder Van names secret routes and viewpoints without calling them off-road. Bring a jacket whichever you choose: the coast is windy in August too.

Jeep or tuk-tuk?
A tuk-tuk is an hour or two on the roads between the palaces above the town. A jeep is half a day or more and goes where the tuk-tuk cannot: into the serra and down to the coast. With a Pena ticket and one morning, take the tuk-tuk or the bus; for the forest and the beaches, the jeep.
Going independently
The coast without a jeep? Bus 1253 to Cabo da Roca.
Bus 1253 runs a circular route from Sintra station via Cabo da Roca two or three times an hour through the day, about 40 minutes to the cape. The cape, the cross and the cliffs are free; only the lighthouse courtyard is ticketed, €5 for the Essential visit. Bus 1254 goes from Portela de Sintra to Azenhas do Mar in 28 to 45 minutes, with 58 departures a day.
What the bus cannot do is the forest tracks and Praia da Adraga: that is the jeep’s half of the day.
