Before booking a small-group tour
How small is “small group”?
Eight people in a minivan on every tour here; the listed limit, not the title. Some listings say “small group” with a limit of 15, 18 or 25 in the small print, which is why they are not on this page.
Does the guide go inside with a small group?
Not on every tour. Lisbon Riders, Portuguese For a Day and Happy Firefly say the guide enters the rooms with you. Inside Lisbon guides the exterior and you go inside on your own. Tour Sweet guides outside the monuments.
Is a small group worth the extra over a coach?
A van of 8 loads in a minute, parks at the gate and changes the order of stops when the queue is long. The price gap is small: from €70 to €80 for a van of 8 with the ticket paid separately, against €89 for a group of 34 with both tickets. The larger groups spend the difference in the car park.
Can a small group still get inside Pena?
Yes when the ticket is in the price: the operator holds the group’s slot. On the tours where you pay on the day or buy your own ticket, the morning slots can be gone; on the dates we checked, the 09:30 slot was sold out on 9 of 10 ?.
Going independently
Two of you? The train is the smallest group.
The return train from Rossio and an adult Essential ticket come to €25.10. You set the pace, book the palace slot yourself and skip the van altogether.
The direct train takes 40 minutes. Bus 434 links the station with the palaces; the 434/435 pass costs €13.50 for 24 hours.
