Before booking from the port
How much time before all-aboard?
The full days here run 8 to 9 hours from pickup; the half days 4 to 5. Add the drive back, 40 to 60 minutes from Sintra, and an hour of margin. With an evening departure a full day fits; with an afternoon one, take Ó turista’s 4.5 hours or a 4-hour ride.
Where does the driver wait?
At the terminal exit. Gold Compass holds a sign with your name; the others ask for the ship’s name and the docking time when you book. Give both, and a phone number that works abroad.
Is there a shared tour from the port?
One here: Around Lisbon collects at the port or a hotel for a 09:00 start with the Pena rooms ticket, in a van of up to 16. The rest are private, priced per person, which for two people costs about the same.
Should the tickets be in the price?
For a cruise day, yes. A tour with the Pena ticket holds the slot for you; on the dates we checked, the 09:30 slot was sold out on 9 of 10. Ó turista and Selection Tours include it; Picta pre-books on request.
Going independently
From the port by train?
Rossio station is in the centre, a taxi from the terminals; the train to Sintra takes 40 minutes and runs every 30 minutes. The return train and an adult Essential ticket come to €25.10.
Count the taxi both ways and the bus 434 at Sintra; on a cruise day the timings are tight, which is why the tours with tickets earn their price.
