What to change if
- You can spare a night
- Take the 17:40 or 18:40 Alfa Pendular down the evening before, sleep in Lisbon, and do Sintra as everyone else does: a tour at 08:00 with the ticket held, or the 08:01 train from Rossio and Pena at 09:30. Back north on the 19:09.
- You would rather sleep in Sintra
- Then the day starts at the station with no train to catch: the 434 at nine, Pena at 10:00, Regaleira after lunch, the coast at five. Tours that start in Sintra meet you at the station.
- Trains are late
- Skip Pena rather than run for it: a missed slot is a lost ticket. Regaleira gives an hour of grace, the castle has no slot, and the old town is ten to fifteen minutes from the station.
- You are on a budget
- Intercidades instead of the Alfa: the 06:45 reaches Oriente at 09:53 and Sintra at 10:55, cheaper on the CP list. Book Pena for 12:30.
