“Pick up & Drop off in Lisbon” is a private day of 6 to 8 hours from €70 per person for a party of 1 to 15, with no tickets in the price. The itinerary lists the castle for 60 minutes, Pena 120, the National Palace 30, Regaleira 120 and Cabo da Roca 60, and the listing says plainly that a typical day is one or two of them inside and the rest from outside. Before choosing a castle and Pena tour

Do I need two tickets, and is there a combined one?

Yes, two, both sold by Parques de Sintra: Pena’s Essential ticket is €20 and the castle €12 for an adult, and the official shop sells a combined ticket for the pair that saves a few euros and one queue. Three tours here put both in the price: Ó turista!, LRS and Van Go. SWINGO and Hikesiders include Pena’s and leave the castle to the gate, where it rarely sells out.

The castle first or Pena first?

Ó turista! and LRS climb the castle first and take Pena after; Van Go and Hikesiders start at Pena. On your own, Pena’s slot decides: the castle has no timed entry, so put it on whichever side of the Pena slot the clock leaves free. The two gates are a 10-minute walk apart on the same road, the castle below Pena.

How hard is the castle?

The full circuit of the walls, both towers and the cistern takes 1 to 1.5 hours on steep, uneven stone with no shade. The Host’s listing calls it physically demanding, Ó turista! asks for moderate fitness, Greenwalk for a high level. The castle closes in strong wind and the official notices page posts it the same day: on a gale forecast, check before you go up, and keep Regaleira in reserve.

Why are these all private?

Because the shared vans from Lisbon drive past the castle on the way to Pena. Of the 40 listings that name it, most mark it a drive-by or a 15-minute photo stop; only nine give the walls half an hour or more and pass our review bar, and all nine are private. The two shared tours that do walk the castle, Hikesiders with 24 reviews and Greenwalk on foot with 20, sit at the end of the page with their counts stated.

Going independently

Both hills on your own? Bus 434 stops at both gates.

The return train from Rossio and the two adult tickets come to €37.10 before the bus. Bus 434 from the station stops at the castle gate first and at Pena’s gate after; the two gates are a 10-minute walk apart on the same road, the castle below Pena. Book Pena’s slot online and take the castle on whichever side of it the clock leaves free: it has no timed entry and rarely sells out.

Count 1 to 1.5 hours for the full circuit of the walls, then two and a half hours for Pena. The castle closes in strong wind and the official notices page posts it, so on a windy morning check before you take the bus up.
