Before choosing a two-palace tour
Can you see both palaces properly in one day?
Yes, with about 90 minutes at each and lunch in the old town between them. The eight above give Pena 90 to 120 minutes and Regaleira 60 to 120; the minutes are in the comparison. Sixty minutes at Regaleira covers the well, the tunnels and the chapel at a brisk pace; ninety adds the upper gardens. The coast tours here still give Pena 90 to 120 minutes; where they cut, it is Regaleira: Odyssey gives it 75 minutes, Lisbon Native 60.
Which palace comes first?
It varies. Portuguese For a Day, Moovearound and Happy Firefly do Pena in the morning and Regaleira after lunch; Tugatrips, Odyssey, SPR and Lisbon Native do Regaleira first and Pena in the afternoon. Neither order is wrong: Pena’s rooms are a timed slot either way, and Regaleira gives an hour of grace after the printed time. On your own, take the Pena slot you can get and fit Regaleira around it: on the ten dates we checked, Pena’s 09:30 slot was sold out on nine ?.
Does the guide go inside both palaces?

What do the two tickets cost if the tour leaves them out?
Pena’s Essential ticket is €20 for an adult and covers the rooms, the terraces and the park; the park-only ticket is €12. Regaleira is €20, one price for the gardens, the well, the tunnels and the palace; €15 for ages 6 to 17 and over 65, free under 6. SPR and Stas Tours buy the tickets for you and take cash on the day; Lisbon Native asks you to book Pena’s 14:30 slot yourself; Moovearound and Happy Firefly leave the booking to you.
Going independently
Both palaces on your own? Train, then the bus.
The return train from Rossio and the two adult tickets come to €45.10 before the bus up the hill. Book Pena’s slot first and early: on the ten dates we checked, the 09:30 slot was sold out on nine ?. Regaleira sells timed entry every 30 minutes, 09:00 to 16:30 in summer, with an hour of grace after the printed time; Pena admits nobody after its slot.
Take the train that arrives an hour before the Pena slot; bus 434 links the station with the palace gate, and the 434/435 pass costs €13.50 for 24 hours. Regaleira is a 15-minute walk from the old town, mostly flat, so it fits after lunch.
