Can I see Lisbon and Sintra in one day?

By Roman Antonov, editor·Updated 13 October 2026

Yes: visit one Sintra monument in the morning and start Lisbon around 14:00. Book Pena for 10:00 or 10:30, then take the weekday 12:40 or 13:00 train back. Choose Belém or Alfama for the afternoon. This leaves out Cabo da Roca and Cascais. It also gives up the Moorish Castle and a leisurely visit to Sintra’s old town.

The three morning tours below leave time for Lisbon afterwards. The independent plan pairs Pena with Belém and costs €67.63 per adult before food, including the Jerónimos online booking fee. Regaleira and an Alfama afternoon are the alternatives.

Pena first, Belém from 14:00 on your own

This clock is for Tuesday to Friday outside public holidays, with Pena at 10:00 and Jerónimos booked for the 14:30 to 15:30 entry window. The visit lengths are the editor’s allowances.

TimeWhatWhy it works
Train from Rossio to SintraThe direct train reaches Sintra at 08:21. That leaves time before the first 434 at 08:50. Buy the return train ticket too, so the afternoon does not depend on another ticket machine queue.
Bus 434 to Pena’s gateTake the first 434 from Sintra station. Departures then run about every 10 minutes. The standard €13.50 pass covers both directions for 24 hours. Aim to reach the park gate by 09:30 for the 10:00 palace slot.
Enter Pena’s New Palace roomsThe €20 Essential ticket includes the New Palace wing and terraces. Allow 30 minutes from the park gate to the palace, on foot or by shuttle. The return shuttle costs €4.50. Give the rooms and terraces 90 minutes, then head down to the station.
Train from Sintra to RossioArrive at Rossio at 13:19. The next direct departure is 13:00, arriving at 13:39. Keep the return leg free of another monument or a sit-down lunch in Sintra.
Metro to Cais do SodréWalk from the railway station to Rossio Metro in Praça da Figueira. Take the Green line through Baixa-Chiado to Cais do Sodré. A bank card tap costs €1.92. Use the remaining time for a quick lunch.
Train from Cais do SodréBelém is 8 minutes away, arriving at 14:08. The afternoon trains run every 20 minutes. That short rail link makes Belém the straightforward second half of this day. Walk from Belém station to Jerónimos.
Jerónimos, then the Belém waterfrontUse the booked cloister entry window. The adult ticket costs €19.11 online, including the €1.11 booking fee. Closing is 17:30, with last entry at 17:00 and ticket sales ending at 16:30. Afterwards, stop at Pastéis de Belém and walk along the waterfront to see Belém Tower from outside.
Return to Lisbon for dinnerThe train from Belém reaches Cais do Sodré at 18:19. This leaves the evening in central Lisbon. The afternoon has covered one Belém interior and the waterfront, with the tower viewed from outside.

This assumes standard adult admission, Jerónimos booked online with its €1.11 fee, a new Navegante card and one Metro trip paid by bank card. Meals and online bus discounts are excluded.

For the 10:30 Pena slot, use the 13:00 train back and the 14:20 Belém train. Choose a morning tour if you want the Lisbon transfers and Pena ticket arranged together.

What to change if

Pena is only after 11:00
Switch to Regaleira if keeping the Lisbon afternoon matters more than Pena’s rooms. If Pena matters most, keep the later slot and shorten Lisbon to an evening walk. Drop the Jerónimos reservation from that version.
You would rather see Regaleira
Book Regaleira’s 10:00 entry for €21.48 per adult online, including the booking fee. Allow 2 hours inside and walk back to the station for the return train. Skip the 434 and Pena shuttle. Entry has 1 hour of grace, though using it eats into Lisbon.
Your visit is in July
Book the morning Pena slot and the Jerónimos afternoon window ahead. Keep Sintra to one monument. If the journey runs late, shorten the Belém waterfront walk. Check the Parques de Sintra notices before leaving Lisbon.
You are on a cruise
Build the day backwards from the ship’s all-aboard time. The cruise-port tours page includes Gold Compass’s 4-hour private option from €37.50 per adult, with tickets extra. Agree the return time before booking. Keep Lisbon to the time left after the port return.

Questions

Are there tours that combine Lisbon and Sintra in one day?

Yes. walkborder runs a private 8-hour Lisbon and Sintra trip with admission fees extra. LivingTours combines Sintra with Belém and Cascais in 9 hours. It includes Pena’s exterior and gardens ticket and a pastry tasting. Its Belém monuments are exterior visits.

Can I do this on a Monday?

Yes, with Alfama as the Lisbon afternoon. Jerónimos and Belém Tower close on Mondays. If you still want Belém, make it an exterior walk with a stop at Pastéis de Belém, which opens daily from 08:00. The €19.11 online cloister ticket then drops out of the budget.

Do the same train times work at weekends?

No. Use the direct 08:01 from Rossio, arriving in Sintra at 08:41, and aim for the 12:50 return, arriving at Rossio at 13:29. The 14:20 from Cais do Sodré reaches Belém at 14:28. Returning from Belém, use 18:16 for Cais do Sodré at 18:24. Public holidays use the weekend train timetable; check monument closures separately.

Should I choose Belém or Alfama for the afternoon?

Choose Belém for the Jerónimos cloister and the waterfront. Choose Alfama for streets and viewpoints without another monument booking. From Rossio, walk through Baixa towards the Sé, then continue to Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol. Keep the afternoon there. Walking this route drops €24.03 of Belém transport and admission from the budget.

Can I start earlier to fit in another Sintra palace?

An earlier train gives you more margin for Pena. It does not move its opening time: the park opens at 09:00 and the palace at 09:30. Rossio’s first direct morning train is 05:41 on weekdays and 06:01 at weekends. Use the extra time for the connection, or give Sintra the whole day if you want a second monument.

Roman

I've lived in Cascais for three years and fell for Portugal, Sintra most of all. This site is where I share it. For a day split with Lisbon, I would spend the morning on one Sintra monument and give the afternoon to one Lisbon district. If Pena’s rooms are the reason for going, I would secure that slot before planning Belém.
