How should I visit Sintra with elderly parents who cannot walk much?

By Roman Antonov, editor·Updated 13 October 2026

Use hotel pickup and plan 1 main monument, with seated breaks after 10 to 15 minutes on foot. Pena’s shuttle still leaves a 90-metre ramp with gradients reaching 18%, then stairs inside. Choose Pena only if both parents can manage those and time standing. Otherwise choose the National Palace with access arranged in advance, or Monserrate’s ground floor with help on the garden slopes. Leave the Moorish Castle ramparts out.

Below are 3 private tours with hotel pickup, then a day by bus with Pena’s shuttle and an optional National Palace visit. The wheelchair alternative and the tours to avoid follow the plan.

Private pickup removes the station bus change

These 3 private days include hotel pickup and last 8 to 9 hours; agree the stops and rest breaks before booking. The first 2 offer a choice of monuments, while the third includes Pena’s rooms ticket.

Why we would book one

  • Picta Travel costs €110 per adult for a customisable private day with pickup. Give the walking limit before booking so the guide can suggest palaces; tickets cost extra.
  • I GO PORTUGAL costs €100 per adult with Lisbon pickup and a choice of Monserrate or Regaleira. Tickets cost extra; choose Monserrate for its accessible ground floor.
  • SWINGO’s €87.99 per adult option includes Lisbon pickup and Pena’s rooms ticket. Choose it only if the final ramp and stairs suit both parents; wheelchair access applies to the transport.

Pena by shuttle, then lunch in town

For a day on your own, use this plan only if both parents can manage Pena’s final ramp and indoor stairs; otherwise make the National Palace the main visit. The times are targets around a booked 10:30 Pena slot, with the afternoon palace optional.

TimeWhatWhy it works
Take the 434 uphillTake the 434 from Sintra station towards Pena. Allow for a station queue at weekends; if standing in line is too much, take a taxi to the main park gate and buy the shuttle separately.
Reach Pena’s main park gateAim to arrive 45 minutes before the palace slot. Buy the €4.50 return shuttle and allow at least 30 minutes from gate to palace, including waiting and the final ramp. The ticket time is for the palace entrance; late entry is refused.
Enter Pena if stairs suitThe Essential ticket costs €18 at 65+ or €20 for other adults and includes the rooms, terraces and park. The interior has stairs; if a seat every 15 minutes is essential, choose the town alternative before booking.
Sit at Pena’s palace caféKeep 30 minutes for a seated café break before the shuttle downhill. Pena’s palace cafeteria has seating; use this stop to decide whether lunch will be the day’s last activity.
Ride back into Sintra townTake the 434 from Pena to Vila de Sintra on the return loop. Leave the Moorish Castle ramparts out; its steep terrain adds another climb before lunch.
Have a seated lunch breakSet aside 1 hour for lunch near Largo Rainha D. Amélia, beside the National Palace. Choose a café table in the square and keep the afternoon optional.
Make the National Palace optionalThe National Palace costs €10 at 65+ or €13 for other adults. Its main entrance has stairs; arrange the kitchen access route and assistance in advance if needed. Visit only if both parents still have energy after lunch.
Return to Sintra stationUse the 434 or 435 back to Sintra station for the Lisbon train. With a private driver, agree collection after the palace or after lunch if you stop early.
2 Pena Essential tickets at €18, age 65+
€36
2 return shuttles at €4.50
€9
2 online 434 and 435 passes at €10.96
€21.92
2 National Palace Essential tickets at €10, age 65+

Total for 2 senior visitors, including both palaces
€86.92

Costs cover 2 visitors aged 65+ with both palaces bought separately and the dated online bus offer; lunch, Lisbon trains and any accompanying adult’s tickets are extra.

The private tours above remove the station bus change and include hotel pickup. Agree the walking limit and the monuments before booking, including which admissions are already in the chosen option.

What to change if

One parent uses a wheelchair
Visit the accessible rooms at the National Palace or the ground floor at Monserrate, with assistance arranged in advance. Reserve a manual wheelchair and any traction equipment through Parques de Sintra if needed. Pena’s rooms have stairs, and the shuttle’s wheelchair platforms are temporarily out of service. Arrange the entrance and assistance before buying tickets.
You use a walking stick
Keep the day in the town around the National Palace and café stops if a stick works only on the flat. Its standard entrance still has stairs, and the kitchen approach has a slope and cobbles. Arrange assistance for that route and use a taxi between station and centre.
You arrive by Lisbon train
Take a CP train from Rossio to Sintra, the end of the line. The station area is about 1 km from the historic centre. Use a taxi for the town or the 434 for Pena, allowing for the station queue before your booked slot.
It rains during your visit
Choose the National Palace for the main indoor visit and arrange entrance assistance if stairs are difficult. Monserrate still has a sloping garden approach. Keep lunch close to the palace, leave wet hill paths out and check the Parques de Sintra notices before travelling.

Questions

Does the lift at Pena avoid the stairs?

No. Pena’s lift serves the shop, restaurant and cafeteria floors, including the cafeteria terrace. Steps connect that terrace to the palace terraces, and the rooms have stairs throughout. Reserve a manual wheelchair or traction equipment for the outdoor route if needed. Choose Pena only when everyone can manage the particular route you have arranged.

Is Monserrate easier than the National Palace?

Monserrate has the simpler palace interior if you stay on the ground floor: a ramp gives access throughout that level. Getting there still means 360 metres from the park entrance on the recommended route, with slopes where assistance is advised. The shorter 260-metre route has stairs. Take the 435 to its gate. Choose the National Palace if you want to stay in town and can arrange its assisted route.

Can we visit Quinta da Regaleira without going down the well?

Yes. Skip the well and its descending stairs, then keep the visit around the palace and café instead of climbing through the upper gardens. The grounds have slopes, steps and uneven surfaces; visitors with reduced mobility must be accompanied. Use the café terrace for a seated break. Take the 435 to the estate, and choose another palace if a flat route is essential.

Which tours should we avoid if we walk slowly?

Avoid Moovearound’s small-group day if either parent has limited mobility. Leave HAPPY TOURS PORTUGAL’s 10-hour day out if either parent walks slowly. A short duration does not settle the question: EasyEscape’s 4-hour tour involves 7 to 8 km on cobbles, stairs and uphill sections. Choose a private route with the walking limit agreed in advance, and match the monuments to that limit.

Is a tuk-tuk suitable for elderly parents?

A tuk-tuk works for a ride past viewpoints if both parents can get in and out of the vehicle. West Route Tours has a 90-minute private circuit at €45 per adult, with monuments seen from outside and no admission tickets. Pickup at a Sintra accommodation is included; train arrivals meet by Queijadas da Sapa. Discuss boarding needs before booking, and keep a separate plan for any palace interior.

I've lived in Cascais for three years and fell for Portugal, Sintra most of all. This site is where I share it. I would spend the extra on pickup and leave the second palace optional. If stairs are a barrier, I would arrange an assisted visit in town before buying a Pena ticket.
