Sintra tours for a first visit

We read and compared listings for 10 Sintra tours from Lisbon with both estates and Pena rooms entry and recommend these 8, grouped by party size and ordered by review count within each band at selection time.

For a first visit with both palaces and the coast, choose Inside Lisbon’s “Upgrade to include Regaleira”: from €115 per adult in a van of 8. Both tickets are included. Its guide introduces the sites; Pena’s rooms are self-guided. For guided rooms and a day focused on Sintra, choose Portuguese For a Day’s “All Tickets Included”: from €120 per adult with 8 people, 90 minutes at Pena and 60 at Regaleira. It leaves out the coast.

All 8 options include Pena’s rooms ticket. Moovearound leaves Regaleira’s 11:30 booking to you; the other 7 include both tickets. The first four carry 8 people; the alternatives offer private transport or larger groups.

Bookable on Viator, which supplies the tour figures and the ratings and review counts across each product’s options using only its own reviews.

Both admissions cover Pena’s rooms and park plus Regaleira, with exterior guiding at Pena and an introduction at Regaleira; meals are separate.

The €79 shared option includes Pena’s rooms ticket and skips Regaleira. The €71 version covers Pena’s park only; €49 buys transport without tickets or a Pena guided visit. Each lasts 8 hours. The €82 private option adds a private guide and vehicle with pickup, including Pena’s rooms ticket.

Choose the upgrade for a first day that also reaches the coast. You give up guided rooms and an extended stay at Regaleira. Departure is at 08:00 outside the Hard Rock Café in Lisbon. Give this one a miss if you need to carry a pushchair or luggage; the van has space for neither.

Take this if hotel collection matters and you are happy to arrange Regaleira yourself. The old town gets 30 minutes before a route that gives Cascais 120. Give this one a miss if you have limited mobility or a heart condition; the day includes uphill walking.

Pena’s ticket decides the first day

Is one day enough for a first visit to Sintra?

Yes, 1 day works for Pena’s rooms and Regaleira if the allotted visiting times suit you. Portuguese For a Day gives them 90 and 60 minutes in an 8-hour day. Regaleira adds the Initiation Well and underground passages; its well and palace are explored without external guiding. ? Save the Moorish Castle, the coast or Monserrate for another day if you want longer at the two estates. The coastal options above suit visitors who accept a longer or fuller itinerary.

Should I go inside Pena on my first visit or is the park enough?

Choose the €20 Essential ticket if you want the New Palace’s furnished rooms as well as the park. ? ? For gardens and exterior views, the €12 park ticket covers the terraces, kitchen and chapel without the New Palace room route. ? The 8 compared options all include room entry. Portuguese For a Day, Tugatrips’ 8-hour option and Portugal Buendía add a guide inside Pena. Inside Lisbon leaves the rooms to you. A first visit does not require every room; choose the access that matches your interest.

Should I visit Pena Palace or Quinta da Regaleira first?

Book Pena’s slot first and allow about 30 minutes from its park gate to the palace entrance. Late arrival has no grace period. ? Portuguese For a Day starts with Pena; Tugatrips’ 8-hour day starts with Regaleira. Either order works with the right tickets. Normal Pena palace hours are 09:30 to 18:30. ? From October to December, Regaleira opens at 10:00 and closes at 18:30, with last entry at 17:30. ? Follow the booked times when arranging your own day.

What if Pena Palace tickets are sold out for my date?

Check for another €20 Essential slot before changing the day. ? If you still want both estates, look for an available date on Inside Lisbon’s €115 Regaleira upgrade or Tugatrips’ €98 option with both tickets. Select that exact option before paying. A cheaper transport-only option leaves the ticket purchase to you and cannot supply a sold-out slot. The sold-out ticket guide explains the remaining official choices. If room entry is essential and none fits, move the palace visit to another date.

Is a private tour worth it for a first visit to Sintra?

For 4 adults wanting their own vehicle and hotel pickup, SWINGO’s €125.55 starting fare totals €502.20 with both tickets. Inside Lisbon’s €115 upgrade totals €460 for four shared seats. The €42.20 difference buys private transport and address pickup; you still visit Pena’s rooms independently. These are starting-fare calculations, so use the booking total for your date and party. Choose the shared van if its meeting point and route suit you. The private or group comparison also covers the cheaper options with only Pena’s ticket.

Going independently

Both estates cost €60.58 by train

Budget €60.58 for 1 adult aged 18 to 64 with a new travel card. That buys the €5.10 Rossio return, €20 Pena Essential ticket and €21.48 online Regaleira admission. ? ? ? Add the €13.50 local 434/435 pass and €0.50 Navegante card, both included in the total. ? ? You book both monument entries.

Book Pena’s slot first. Take the Rossio train to Sintra and bus 434 up the hill, then return towards town for Regaleira. For a first visit, the van removes the station’s 434 queue and the transfer planning. Private cars cannot use Pena’s access road; Regaleira has no parking. ? ? Walking inside the estates remains part of either day.

Roman Antonov, editor

I live in Cascais, twenty minutes from Sintra, and I love the place. This site is where I share it: the palaces, the trains, the tickets, and now the tours.

I compared the 10 qualifying tours by the ticket arrangements and the guide’s role at each estate. For a first visit focused on Sintra, I would choose the guided rooms and leave the coast for another day.

Ticket prices and hours come from Parques de Sintra, train fares and times from CP, checked on the date shown. Tour prices, inclusions, group sizes and review counts come from the listings and carry the date they were read.
